How to Keep Your Wedding Flowers Fresh Before Preservation
After the excitement of the wedding day winds down, many brides are left wondering what to do with their bouquet before it’s time for preservation.
The good news is that keeping your flowers looking their best before preservation is actually very simple. The most important thing is keeping them hydrated and cool until they make their way to the studio.
Keep Your Flowers in Water
After the wedding, your bouquet should go back into fresh water as soon as possible. A vase works best, but honestly, any clean vessel with water is perfectly fine. The goal is simply to keep the stems hydrated so the flowers can maintain their structure and freshness prior to preservation.
If possible, change the water and give the stems a fresh trim before placing them back in water, especially if it will be more than a day before drop-off.
Keep Them Cool
Heat is the biggest enemy when it comes to fresh flowers. Try to store your bouquet in a cool indoor space away from direct sunlight, heaters, or warm windows.
And most importantly—don’t leave your flowers sitting in a hot car, especially during summer weddings. A bouquet left in a sweltering car for several hours can wilt very quickly, and once flowers become severely dehydrated, they’re much more difficult to preserve beautifully.
You Don’t Need Anything Fancy
A lot of brides ask if they should add flower food, aspirin, sugar, or other “flower hacks” to the water. The answer is no. Plain fresh water is all your flowers need.
No special treatments. No complicated process.
Just:
- Fresh water
- A cool place to rest
- Getting them to the studio as soon as possible
Timing Matters
The sooner flowers can be dropped off after the wedding, the better. Fresh flowers always preserve more successfully than flowers that have been sitting for several days.
That said, don’t stress if your bouquet looks a little tired after a long wedding day—some flowers naturally hold up better than others, and part of my job is selecting the best blooms to preserve from your arrangement.
